Year in Review: 2022 Birth

Birth is transformative. It is unpredictable. It is beautiful, raw, messy, and intense. It is a universal experience - you will experience birth at least once in your lifetime - and yet it’s shrouded in so much mystery, so many false narratives and societal taboos that it’s hard to separate the “made for tv” content and the “real.”

One reason I love birth photography so much is that I can bring that “real” to public spaces and show an audience what birth looks like - and not just what is portrayed in the movies. I can document the genuine connections, the intensity and love, and yes - the messy, bloody, beautiful and heartbreaking moments as well - and the images I capture become a part of that family and their history. They can help process, help heal, and help connect. There’s power in that, and beauty.

My favorite year in review grid? This one right here. Documenting life entering the world. Documenting the first breath. The first ecstatic embrace. The moment of “I FUCKING DID IT!” and the tears, the smiles, the laughter and love. It’s an honor to be invited into these spaces.
